My 35 : 30 Minutes from Miri to Mulu

090309 0500H - Get up early morning for Fajr prayer and what else, to prepare as soon as possible since we need to check-in at least 30 minutes before the departure time : 0920H. We straight away when to Miri Airport after Checking out from the Telang Usan Hotel, Miri and a quick nasi lemak + Nescafe tarik for the breakfast.

090309 0845 - Arrived at the airport. We manage to be there before the departure time. There were a lot of people wearing jump-suit checked-in with the airlines. MASWings, a subsidiary airlines under Malaysian Airlines provide rural air services (RAS) to the most part of Sabah and Sarawak especially the interior part. Flying Asian Xpress unable to handle it since the airline company not a GLC and they claimed they unable to make profit with these route. It's true since these route not a commercial route but more on community service for the interiors. Guess we need to thank the government that provide the facilities to the people.

090309 0920 - It announced that our flight delayed for several more minutes due to the bad weather. Yes, March is a monsoon period where the North-East Wind blew from the Northern Hemisphere to the South carries clouds and humidity. I prayed that it is a safe journey and we able to reached there without much problem.

090309 0950 - Finally they've called for the passengers to board the plane. It still rained outside but not too heavy. My heart really beats fast as soon that I realized we actually boarding a Fokker 50, small planes that can accommodate 50 passengers. Gosh - it will be a bumpy ride through the clouds.

090309 1030 - Yes I was right about the ride. It really like riding a roller-coaster where you go up and down (I just exaggerate it!) through the clouds. But alas, we reach Mulu Airport in one-piece. Alhamdulillah. But in my mind, I'm still thinking that we will experience it again on our way back to Miri. God - please help me!

Prologue - Months Before Mulu & Kinabalu

GUNUNG MULU NATIONAL PARK,

I had a call early of January this year from a friend. She's been telling that a few of my colleague from Sandakan, Sabah had planned a road trip from Sandakan to Mulu. What a journey! So, I didn't hesitate to join them, even I will departed from KL directly to Miri. There's goes half of the journey's fun. Really, a road trip from Sandakan(Sabah) - Ranau(Sabah) - Kota Kinabalu(Sabah) - Beaufort(Sabah) - Sipitang(Sabah) - Lawas(Sarawak) - Labu(Brunei) - Bangar(Brunei) - Bukok(Brunei) - Limbang(Sarawak) - Brunei - Miri Sarawak) : it's adventurous and, and, and; can't really described it. I've calculated, it required 7-8 checkpoints as it involved 3 different countries / states that have their own immigration.

Since I'm the only one from KL, across the South China Sea - I just flew there with airline. I waited them in Miri 2 days after the departed from Sandakan. A journey of 2 hours + that covered hundred miles compared to 2-days trip by land from Sandakan to Miri. I've cheated the geographical location. Hahaha.

Well Mulu is worth to visit. It's the earliest place that have been recognized as the World Heritage Site in Malaysia together with Kinabalu National Park in 2000. The place is well-known by the outsiders but not well promoted enough among Malaysian especially in Peninsular. It's like the jewel of Sarawak, rich with it biodiversity of flora and fauna and many more.

So, why should I miss the trip? I just prepared myself with nearly everyday jogging and work-out in gym for 2 months. Wanna make sure I'm fit enough to conquer both National Park. Really, it's crazy but yet excited.

Take 5 - Lazy + Full Moon

It's quite sometime I haven't updated my blog. Not that no interesting tales to tell - my journey to Mulu and Kinabalu in March were worth to be shared; but I'm too lazy to post the story. What happening!!!!

My bet is because of the full moon - yes Fuaz, blame it to others for your own mistake. But really I've read somewhere in the articles, mention that some theory suggesting that there is correlation between specific stages of the Earth's lunar cycle and deviant behavior in human beings. There's a lot of scientific study done involving this area such as a study concluded that schizophrenic patients show signs of deterioration, in terms of quality of life and mental well-being, during the time of a full moon. However most of these studies based on a small-scale research and some did contained at least one statistical error. I hate the statistician that make this wonderful or magical phenomena unrealistic.

BTW, still I've experienced it and some do experience it. Even though it's only a Evidence-Based Level V or E (I think so, since 3rd party experience doesn't really count as evidence) - the experience is there. So as what Agent Fox Mulder said - "This whole phenomena is a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a government agenda." ; but at least our government doesn't involved in this. Hahaha

With 31 days in the month of March passed us, here are some recaps.

1. Earth Hour 2009 The event started in Sydney 2 years ago has gathered 88 nations and 4,000 cities all over the world this year with raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. Finally, we do agree on the same issue and it takes not one but all to tackle the global warming.

2. Rasuah vs Politik Wang
Well the controversies doesn't end - yet. Even with the recent election and probably the best ever line-up, UMNO still struggling to clear up it image from this problem.

3. Thanks Pak Lah and Welcome Najib

It already confirmed, Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi retired it post as President of UMNO and possible Prime Minister of Malaysia with his replacement, none other the son of second Prime Minister of Malaysia - Dato Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak. Well he shouldn't worry about his legacy as his son-in-law - Mr Khairy Jamaluddin win the post as 'Ketua Pemuda', and maybe as the next Prime Minister-to-be. It seems like the previous Malay sultanate where the head of state runs by certain family.

4. The Battles Begin

After a 'successful' AGM with the new line-up, UMNO enter the battles of 2-hills and 1-river facing Pakatan Rakyat (People's Pact) and other Independence. All three are significance battles with Bukit Selambau showed first time in history 15 candidates eyeing for the ADUN post. Bukit Gantang surely a referendum for Perakian towards BN's back-door government and Batang Ai will give a signal whether PKR's presence in Sarawak is acceptable and able to form the next new state-government in less than 2 years time.

I wouldn't say that my stay too long, but I did enjoy Sabah. Even with less than 2 years a lot happened compare to my stay in Kuala Lumpur for my whole life. Sabah provides a lot of excitement, bet it either city or village, modern or traditional, concrete or jungle and many more.

In term of my practice, here I learned a lot compare to my Peninsular colleague. Here you can perform most of the surgical procedures, manage patients with limited facilities, learn without much pressure from your superior but more on the cases you see and plus, plus, plus. I do really miss Sabah, and I won't regret to be in Sabah - thanks to MOH that put me there. But I do regret I have to come back early nevertheless I do hope I can be back there as a specialist.

So here some of my memoirs about Kota Marudu, a lonely district in Kudat division - fame for Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili (the MP), corn and posisang! What? Posisang - yes a tiny smelly beetles that came-out during full-moon. They can turned white pole - to back pole.

On the way to Lahad Datu from Sandakan, you will not missed this ancient burial site. Agop Batu Tulug or Batu Tulug cave (from Orang Sungei language) located 41 km from Kota Kinabatangan. This limestone cliff reaching 39 m high can easily seen on your left side while driving about one and half hour drive from Sandakan to Lahad Datu.

The origin of this place still unknown but popular belief it was an ancient burial site for the early Chinese settlements. Agop Batu Tulug was first explored in 1894 by an expedition team led by Mr P Brietag - the manager of tobacco estate in Kinabatangan. Further exploration and survey made by the Sabah Museum proved that this place provides valuable information regarding Sabah's past history.

My 30 : Kinabatangan (Ep 1) - Swiftlet Nests

Kinabatangan, a district located in Sandakan division. The size of this district is bigger than the size of the state of Pahang (the largest state in Peninsular). The name of Kinabatang famous for - 1 : the second longest river in Malaysia after Rajang, the river runs 560 kilometers from its headwaters in the mountains of southwest Sabah, to its outlet at the Sulu Sea, east of Sandakan. 2 : Who would forget the outspoken Member of Parliament represented Kinabatangan - Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin with his controversial remarks in the Parliament such as "bocor", "bigfoot of Kinabatangan" and quarrel with Karpal Singh.

Rattan ladders that used for the bird nests collection - so high and a high-risk job to do. I'm not sure whether any insurance company able to cover them!

The other will be the Gomantong cave - famous for it's swiftlet nests. The cave system consisted of 2 main caves : Gua Sumud Hitam and Gua Sumud Putih based on the colour of saliva produced to make the swiftlet nests. Gua Sumud Hitam is easily access while Sumud Putih required special permit as it located higher and quite dangerous to climb-up.

The birds' nest collection is an ancient tradition, and the trading of these nests has been done since at least 500 AD. Twice a year, from February to April and July to September, locals with licenses climb to the roof of the caves, using only rattan ladders, ropes, and bamboo poles, and collect the nests.

The caves not just home to the swiftlets but it contains million of bats and massive amount of cockroaches! Watch your feet when you walk inside the cave - you might step on them. For those who're phobia to cockroach or Katsaridaphobia- do not light the floor as you might scream to death with the amount of cockroach you can see. Trust me as I too a Katsaridaphobia.

Visit to Sandakan didn't complete if you guys didn't pay a visit to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. The centre located 25 km from the city centre - nearly 30 - 45 minutes drive. The centre was established in 1964 by the Sabah Forestry Department with the main objective to rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned baby orangutan from logging sites, plantations, and illegal hunting. Now, the centre had expanded their role not just a one-stop education centre fot orangutan but to the other endangered species in Sabah such as Sumatran Rhino. Till this blog posted - the admission fee is RM 5 for Malaysian adult.

My 28 : Sandakan (Ep 2) - Soul Searching

Constitutional crisis, greedy-power, selfish, economic recession etc. Guess it is never-ending problem that haunted human-being. At least the All-Mighty Creator has given us guidance to sail through this unpredictable ocean. But human are too arrogant, didn't bother about this divine help - yet, till they have suffered enough.

We're lucky that in Malaysia most people are still hold strong with their religion believes. Even it's one of our 'Rukun Negara' and the number one - to believe in God (Kepercayaan kepada Tuhan). It's mean that people who're disbeliever is not a part of this country!

St Michael's and All Angels Church - this beautiful granite church was built in 1897 and was one of Sandakan's few surviving pre-war buildings.

I admit that I never been to other church in Malaysia except several overseas. This church so beautiful resembles the old English architecture. Worth to visit.

Sabah, the Land below the Wind - blessed with their multi-ethnicity and - religion. With difference ethnic, language and religion - Sabahan still able to live peacefully among others. Somehow I wonder why do we have problems related to our differences in Peninsular compared with our brothers in Borneo. We do experienced it physically and mentally though.

May be what do we all need to do is - soul searching ...

Sandakan - was founded by William Clarke Cowie, a Scottish gun smuggler from Glasgow, who received permission from the Sultan to establish a small trading base. Sandakan means "the place that was pawned" in Tausug or Sulu language - then known as Kampung German based the large number of Germans post in Sandakan. The new British resident later named the place as Elopura means "the Beautiful City" in 1879. A few years later, the name was changed back to Sandakan, but Elopura still refer to this city.

Agnes Keith house - also known as Newlands - two-storey home of local author Agnes Keith and her husband, lived on this site from 1930 to 1952: they rebuilt the present house on the foundations of their pre-war home which had been destroyed in World War II. The house has recently been restored after a number of years of neglect.

"the Land Below the Wind" makes Sabah a renowned place in the world for her beauty, peaceful and harmony state with multi-ethnic and religion. Thanks to Agnes Keith who gave this 'unofficial motto' - Sabah made her way on the world map. Mrs Keith, an American author - married to Mr Henry G Keith and had spent her life in North Borneo; particularly in Sandakan and has made three famous autobiography about her lifetime in Borneo - during pre-, and post- World War II. Mrs. Keith wrote several books about Sabah and its people, including Land Below the Wind, Three Came Home, and White Man Returns, and a novel, Beloved Exiles.

Just back from Miri - 3 days ago. Still tired to write any new entry / post. When I look through my photo's collection of Sabah, I realized I've forgotten to mention about Kundasang. This peaceful town is located near to the Kinabalu Park - about 6 km. It's location near to the Mount Kinabalu makes this town so cold and clean. It's renowned for its vegetable market which is open daily and has a panoramic view of the Mountain Kinabalu.

Another interesting place in Kundasang is Kundasang War Memorial Park. First opened by Major G.S. Carter, a New Zealander employed with Shell Oil Co. (Borneo); in memory of 2,428 British and Australian POW who had died during World War II. The casualties mainly due to the suffering of series of death marches from Sandakan to Ranau - about 160 + km!

Kundasang War Memorial Park - where the parks dedicated for the fallen heroes of the World War II - Australian, New Zealanders, British and the struggle of the locals in providing aid for them. With me Hisyam and Izraf.

The memorial park is really a nice place, mainly divided to 4 main sections / parks - the Australian Garden, the English Garden that have a lot of roses, the Borneo Garden rich with native flowers such as orchids and tropical pitcher plants; and 'Contemplation Garden' with a reflection pool and pergola.

My 25 : Gateaway to Murut Country

OK, it's back to Sabah's geography. Sabah is divided to 5 main divisions - namely West-Coast, Sandakan, Tawau, Kudat and Interior. Being in Interior division, Tenom - one of the district in this division is a land-locked district. Now days - it is well connected with other districts via road to Keningau and from there to other cities in Sabah.

Tenom located roughly about 112km from Kota Kinabalu - capital city of Sabah. It was served through three main roads either from Ranau through Tamparuli, Tambunan through Penampang or Keningau through Papar. I would advise the later road as it is the most scenic road that cut through Crocker Range, but it is one of the most slope road in Sabah!

From left : Tenom Tamu Market - I think it was held twice a week - if I remember it well; in front the Taman Pertanian Sabah booth with Fidot's friend, Shariman and Hisyam.

From left : the dead Rafflesia -it was said that the flower bloom once in 5-6 years time, who knows?; one of the largest lotus leaves that growing here in the agricultural park, I even saw a picture that a 3 years old child sitting over this leaf!

From left : Sabah Agricultural Park; deers of the park - its translate as Rusa in Malay language but better known as Payau among Sabahan, usually the main target during the hunting season even in my past district - Kota Marudu.

Tenom was previously known as Fort Birch by the British colonial, famous for Murut culture (the principal ethnic here that consist 60% of the population) and the main festival - Pesta Kalimaran, the last stop for the North Borneo Railway and the Agriculture theme. Here you can enjoy the train ride, coffee that is famous in Sabah and other agriculture products. And if you lucky enough, you can experience the biggest flower in the world blooming - which I wasn't lucky enough to observe it. :(

So for those who enjoy a much laid back environment, cool and yet less pollution - do come to Tenom and experience it by yourselves.

My 24 : Labuan and Kudat Re-visit

Being a medical officer is quite busy as we didn't had much time to spent for ourselves. Calls like mad that can spent 20 days in a month, even sometimes more than that if one of our colleague when for short course or on leave. But still, in our free time - Sabah did offer a lot of interesting places to stroll into. While my Peninsular counterpart used their free time for shopping or rest in their house with their family, we all went to different place in Sabah for vacation.

In between of my orthopedic and pediatric posting, my colleague asked me to join them to Labuan and Kudat - it's in different way as Labuan located to the west of Kota Kinabalu and Kudat on the other site. But, why not!

In Labuan, we decided to stay in my aunt house (remember from the previous post?). Quite difficult as she keep asking whose the girls I bring with - not like I've got any serious relationship with them. Just friends (isn't it Diana and Azura?). Well in Kudat we just revisited the same place as before with the addition of Labuan Marine Museum. In Kudat, we've visited the Rungus Traditional House - that sure bring back memory to Abeng as he is Rungus.

Another visit by family in 2007, but this time both my 'pak long' and 'mak long' have join us. Apart from Labuan, Menumbok and Kuala Penyu; I just bring them to usual places like Taman Laut Tunku Abdul Rahman, Kundasang and the favorite place for my mum and aunt - Filipino Market!. But somehow during this time I didn't take much picture. I don't know why, hmmm.

TANTO NOMINI NULLUM PAR ELOGIUM

Yet another month has passed-by. February is not just remembered as the month of love (valentine isn't it?) but for Malaysians, this year it had added more spice to it. Here were some that happened in February 2009 as far as I remembered.

Constitutional crisis in Perak with a BACK-DOOR government were formed.

So, now an 11-month Pakatan Rakyat had been forced to dissociate as 3 of their members declared independence and one returned to UMNO making the BN has the majority to form the government. However, due to some court issues involving the 3 members make this government not a strong-one. Both Pakatan Rakyat and Barisan Nasional claimed that they're the legal government based on the majority 28 - 28 each with 3 pending-independence declared they're fully support the BN. Hmm - sounds suspicious as 2 of them still waiting the result from the bribery case in court. I won't make any comment on that. But, the most important things that the power to elect the representative in the government should be given back to the people and let them choose whoever they confident to serve them. At the end, peoples of Perak has suffered from these 'catastrophe' made by politician who us thinking on how to get power for themselves.People now have three by-elections - that can show out wether they're agree with the BN or PR representatives - Bukit Gantang (Perak), Bukit Selambau (Kedah) and Batang Ai (Sarawak).

Selangor MB Wars
Well this another state that has been held by Pakatan Rakyat from March 2008 General Election, under fire by the former MB with the charges of bribery and misused of state's money. However, it had back-fired as the former MB 'not that cleaned' as he had alleged being doing the same when he was in-power last time. It seems people can resist in taking chance when they have given so much power. Lucky, I'm just an ordinary citizen that haven't had that kind of 'power'. Yes, many accused others being abuse of power - but they too doing the same when they've given one. God forbid, and may Allah gave me strength not to behave like them.

Privacy and death threat

It looks like being member of parliament or state assembly doesn't guarantee you to be safe. This month we have been exposed on a story where one State Councilor and the member of state assembly of Kedah had resigned from his post due to death threats to him and his family member. Even our fame 'Lion of Jelutong' was given the same threat when he received used bullets from unknown. It looks like our politician has really adopted Machiavelli's style for their political needs. Another sad things that when one of the exco member of Selangor has her private picture circulated in the net - allegedly said to discredit the Selangor's Pakatan Rakyat government. Again, when we look deeply into this matter - its all happen as result from the March 2008 General Election. It looks that some are struggle to stay in power, and some will do anything that possible being it moral or unmoral to get the power back. What will happen to Malaysia? Who knows and again I pray that the country will survive.

Economy Recession
Being a government worker in the critical area (well, doctors still in high demand), I didn't feel much of the problem. But for the others, especially those working in production area has been offered either unpaid leaves, option for resignation or worst - stopped by the employee. Some have speculated that the recession worst than the 1997 crisis. Guess we do really need to prepare umbrella for the upcoming storm. And I do hope our leaders either from BN or PR will really lead us successfully through this unfortunate event.

May 2007, and yet another visit by family to Sabah. But this time a bit different as one of my aunt actually moved to Labuan island earlier. AlhamduliLlah, at least I've some relatives here cross the South China Sea in case of anything happen. The family decided to stop-by Labuan for several days before going to Kota Kinabalu.

Labuan island is part of Malaysian Federal territory, which consisted with the other 2 territory - Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. Its located about 8 km off the coast of Borneo island, made into Federal territory in 1984. Its the only offshore financial centre offering international financial and business services via Labuan International Business and Financial Centre (IBFC). Its one of the 3 islands so far that made as a free-trade zone. Meaning cheaper car, cigarettes and alcohol!

A lot of interesting places in Labuan; and the best part most of the attractions are free! But the most adventurous activities will be scuba-diving as Labuan's marine area offer vast collection of sink-ships from the World War II periods. Since I didn't have scuba license, I couldn't experienced it - sigh!

For those who enthusiast in adventure, thrill and water - yes water, Padas River offer this excitement. Situated in Beaufort - that means Beautiful Fort - the river has been graded 2 -3 (especially in raining season) for the whitewater rafting.

All you guys needed the guts to paddle till the end of the trail and emm some money to pay for the service. I can't remember how much is it - but to reduce the amount paid is by organizing it with more people. This is one of the time that you can ride and have experience with the only service train available in Borneo island! You even can go to the Interior part of Sabah (namely Tenom) using the same train service.

We didn't took a lot of photos while rafting as the guide forgot to put negative films inside his camera - CURSE HIM! But the memory will lasted as for me this is once-in-a-lifetime experience. I still wanna do it again!

Detour Sabah : Riding Ostrich

Have you guys tried riding a two-leg ostrich? It's a whole different experience - kinda like you're climbing on the back of one of your friends. To put trust on the 2-leg creature, hmm I've been think twice for it. But, alas - the creature is so STRONG!

Ok, there's a lot of places in Malaysia that you can visit to the ostrich farm. But in Sabah, it's different in a way that the place is much nicer and clean too. Furthermore, to ride it in the capital of East Cowboys (Kota Belud) give you extra KICK!

Requested it to be blind-folded as I afraid that it will kick-me off. Hahaha!

The farm is operated by a company name Arah Yakin Sdn Bhd. situated in Kampung Nanamun, Kota Belud. It offer overall education regarding breeding ostrich from early stage (egg hatching, foods that needed, etc.). You guys can even book to have lunch or dinner there with the main course consist of ostrich meat and egg (OF COZ!). So, guys put on your shoes and come to get a once-a-life-time experience here. (Ermm - I didn't gain any profit in promoting this place, just wanna share with the others!)

Pulau Tiga National Park

Pulau Tiga or Tiga island - formed by three island (that's the name of Tiga derived from) : Pulau Tiga (the main island), Pulau Kalampunian Damit (or famously known as Snake Island) and Pulau Kalampunian Besar - where the most of the Survivor games takes place. It have 3 resorts with one of it operated by the Sabah Park (state government body). It gazetted as National Park in 1978. The islands were formed on September 21, 1897, when an earthquake on Mindanao caused a volcanic eruption near Borneo.

It has 4 main beaches namely Pagong-pagong, Tagi (the first two were the name of The Survivor groups), Ramis and Larai-larai. It still has remains of volcano as we can see in the Survivor - the mud volcano. Previously there were three such places in the island, however only one remain as the other two has already dried.

Sabah is bless with beautiful landscape thanks to the All Mighty.It's a great opportunity to be here in Sabah - the land that actually once I've visited before I transfer here. Even though among Malaysian especially in Peninsular - they only know that Sabah is fame for the Mount Kinabalu - the mountain that was thought the highest in South East Asia (apparently it's no. 5 in SEA);Sabah acan offer more than that.

One of it is Pualu Tiga National Park, known as Survivor island for the hit reality TV series on the 1st season. Not many knows about the island even among the Sabahan until the series emerged. So, thanks to Mr Mark Burnett (the producer of Survivor) - a lot a people come here to experience the virgin island.

From Kota Kinabalu, we have to go through several towns on the west coast of Sabah before reaching Kuala Penyu - where the boat to the National Park departure. It have 2 different routes - 1 through Beaufort and another through Membakut. The first option quite far but using a new road that comfortable. The later choice shorter than the first but its old road. We opted the later choice as this the only way that we can enjoy 'kapal-tarik' - the only one that left in Malaysia (I presumed).

Kuala Penyu is a town located 80km from Kota Kinabalu. It got its name from a group of stones forming types of "Turtle" or call penyu situated at river bank or Kuala (in Malay). Sadly, this valuable form of stone slowly disappeared due to erosion. This town is famous for "Pesta Rumbia" - a special celebration for "Sago" trees which are only planted widely in the district.

We've been to Semporna in our trip to Tawau. The town located 75km from Tawau City founded in mid 1880's by Chinese settlers. Here the population mainly are Bajau, visited by tourist mainly as their base before trips to Sipadan Island for scuba diving and snrkeling. I'll definetly be back to this town later as I really like Sipadan - the most beautiful island in Malaysia.

My 18 - From Tawau to Nunukan Island

Migration of people in Nusantara archipelago has been started thousand years ago and it's continue till now. In Sabah you can see a lot of peoples from different ethnicity as a result from this 'mixing process'. Tawau itself as a town that has been established since early 1890's, showed the different varieties of ethnic that blend together in harmonious way. But don't be surprised that 2/3 of its citizens were actually non-locals from neighboring island (Indonesian and Filipinos). In latest 2007 census showed that total Malaysian was 150, 000 while the non-locals was 245,000. What a different!

Tawau is famous for their local seafood, natural reserve in Tawau Hill Parks, and stop by to other famous islands like Sipadan and Mabul through Semporna. Tawau located 500km from Kota Kinabalu can be reach either by land - (which 8 hours ride from North City Bus Terminal in Inanam, Kota Kinabalu) or the fastest by air through MAS (KK - Tawau / KL - Tawau) or Air Asia (KK - Tawau) that landed in Tawau International Airport.

Nunukan Island
East Kalimantan, Indonesia

While on trip with my friend - Kay, we just decided to go to Nunukan Island, located in Indonesia's East Kalimantan. Nothing much there but we just wanna see what's the local daily activities. Most of their goods are from Tawau since it's the nearest city with port. And how unlucky were us that the trip for half days become a one night stay. Thanks to the ferry that left us earlier from the port - arghh stranded in foreign country! Since nothing much to do at night, we just sleep early so that we won't missed the earliest ferry on the other day. What an experience!

Detour Sabah : Family Visit 06 (Part II)

After a night-stay in Kinabalu Park, we went to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. This is my second visit but I don't mind to come again as the place IS REALLY NICE. Tunku Abdul Rahman Park is actually a designated area by the Sabah government as National Sea Park. It consisted 5 islands namely Pulau Gaya (the largest and the only island with inhabitants), Pulau Manukan, Pulau Sulug, Pulau Mamutik and Pulau Sapi.

From left : before departure; since I know some locals - I did asked them favour to ride their boat. Warning - only license tour boat allowed to dock or bring tourist to the Sea Park.

My advise are first to come early as this islands tend to attract huge crowd between 9am till 12pm. Second advise - please bring a lot of breads as you can feed and play with the friendly fishes. You guys might try on several water sports available.You can snorkeling, scuba diving, and others. There's some conservation fees for the tourist but I can't remember the amount. It's different from locals and foreigners.

I didn't lie to yo - you can really play with the fishes. It's a lot and so colourful. Don't worry their bite it's nothing. But please make sure you guys take precaution as there's several time it's jellyfish seasons. Some just have small skin reaction from their stings but there's case a Korean boy died because their poisonous sting. More on anaphylactic shock I presume.

Detour Sabah : Family Visit 06 (Part I)

Well, my family was really thankful that I was transferred to Sabah. Not because they want to kick-me-out from the house (I do hope not!), but this is their chance to visit Sabah with all expenses being paid. Duh - but somehow I liked the idea.

For the first time, my parents just need to prepare cost for airlines. Others including accommodation, land-transportation, foods and other cost will be bear by me. Well - I'm the host right now. So, after discussing with some of my friends here on where to bring them - I decided to bring them to Kundasang and Tunku Abdul Rahman Park later.

Chalets availabe to be rent in Kinabalu Park. Quite interesting as they're build based on English cottage. There's chalet for 2 and 4 person, and some are big enough for 8-10 peoples + kitchenette.

To tell you truth, this is my first time to one of the World Heritage Site in Malaysia - the Kinabalu Park. Driving there not that easy, with bumpy ride ascending Kundasang with my old-purple Kelisa PGA 8746. Here, in Kundasang it's really one stop that many things can be done. If you planned well, you can even climb-up Mountain Kinabalu - the highest point in Borneo and Malaysia. Others like Kundasang Fresh Market, Kundasang War Memorial, Kinabalu Park, Poring Hot Spring Nature Reserve and others.

My 17 - First Visit to Manukan Island

There's a lot of interesting place in Kota Kinabalu that you can visit. Guys - if you love beach, water and sun plus fishes - yes a lot of fishes; do make a day-visit to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. This the only National Water Park near to the city - is really near to Kota Kinabalu citycentre. It's just a boat-ride to the Park.

You can choose either the legal one from Jesselton Point (which a bit cost as you need to pay the tax for departure from the port) or if you know any local, you can take it from the market itself. The later option is not guaranty as a lot of non-locals use it for the Pulau Gaya - Citycentre route.

My first visit was nothing much as we didn't planned it properly. But, I did enjoy the scene and the surrounding. The crystal-clear water where you can actually feed and play with the small-beautiful fishes. What a heaven!

I guess I did change a lot from the first time I'm in Sabah till my departure day. Hehehe

My 16 - Likas

Likas is a second 'training-ground' for us - medical officer-going-to-be; beside in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kota Kinabalu. Here, we're posted for O&G and Peadiatric as the hospital caters referral for both fields.

One of the landmark in Likas is the 'floating-mosque' or officially known as Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu. The location just beside the beach make the mosque unique compared to others. I remember my first EidualAdha prayer in Sabah was in this mosque. Apparently I didn't make it asI thought they started as in Peninsular. Guess what? When I arrived there, everybody were rushing back as they've finished the prayer. Well - in Sabah, the sunrise 'early' as the time was already standardised during Mahathir's time. Ever wonder why 6.00 AM in Sabah is bright compared to KL?

My 15 - Cowboys of the East

In Sabah, locals do have what they called as 'Tamu', a gathering of locals especially farmers, fishermans and artists to sell their product among each other and to the outsiders. It's a way for them to gain income. Tamu basically like an open market but it's more vibrant and fascinating compared to night-market in Peninsular.

Each town had their own specialities like Kudat fame for their coconut product, Kota Marudu for their corns and etc. One of the biggest tamu is and always be in Kota Belud, situated about 70km from Kota Kinabalu. The town location is the middle point between Kota Kinabalu to towns in the nothern site (namely Kota Marudu, Kudat and Pitas).

Kota Belud is famous for their anual event - 'Tamu Besar' or big market as what they called. Usually it takes place in October each year. Tamu Besar is not a usual open market. Here you can find swords with good craftmenship, 'gong' (I even been told by my friend that each village has their own gong trademark), and others. You can even bargain for live animals like cow, goat and buffalo. This is the only town in Sabah you can find animals like goat, cow, buffalo, horse and chicken on the road - roaming freely and sometime dangerous to the road-user.

In this event also you guys can enjoy the traditional show on what the town famous for - Cowboys of the East. Majority people here are among Bajau that renown for their great skills with horses. Even small children age 3 - 5 years are able to ride horse. So guys - mark your calendar in October each year when you want to join this great event.

My 14 - Tip of Borneo

I admit that I didn't had a chance to travel around Sabah for the 3 months when I first started my housemanship. Lack of fund (my first pay-roll was 3 months after start working!), not enough time and did not possessed own transport were my excuse.

The first place that I've visited in Sabah was Kudat. Situated at the north of Sabah, Kudat was previously a capital for British North Borneo. Founded by A H Everett on December 7, 1881 the capital was later moved to Sandakan in view of multiple attacks by Bajau, Sulu and Iranun pirates.

Bronze glob that located in Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, marks the location at latitude 7N and longitude 116E. A map featuring the island of Borneo is embossed in bronze and laid on a flat surface at an angle with inscriptions to mark the Tip of Borneo.

Kudat is 178km or more than 2 and half hours from Kota Kinabalu. It is famous for Tanjung Simpang Mengayau - the northernmost tip of Borneo; Kudat Marina & Golf Resort - the oldest golf club in Borneo and Rungus traditional longhouse.

My 13 - Land Below The Winds

Today marks 30 months from the 1st day I started my work as a medical officer.It's one of the most challenging work in the world - if you ask me, considering you at most of your time dealing with people who asked your experts with their problem. It's not just medical / health problem, but it involved problems as the whole human itself which includes family, financial, religious, etc.

I'm a UKM MD graduated in 2006, finished my housemanship training in Queen Elizabeth Hospital + Maternity and Child Likas Hospital. It's a tough year but I always remind myself that my work is noble. All the obstacles that I managed get trough made me a holistic-approach doctor.
Since in 6 weeks time I'll coming back to Kota Kinabalu to conquer Mt Kinabalu - the 5th highest point in SEA at the height of 4,095 mt. I really regret that I haven't climbed Mt Kinabalu while staying there but I more than happy to be back in Kota Kinabalu.

So - guys, I'll share some of my experince in the Land Below The Wind from today till the mid of March.

In front is the old block consisted of old maternity and child ward on the ground floor (which replaced by neurosurgery and orthopaedic ward once it's shifted to Likas Hospital) and general medical ward on the 2nd and 3rd floor. The new block (at the back) built in 1981 with the cost of RM 20 million. It consisted of General Surgical, Operational Theatre, Orthopaedic, First Class and VIP ward, other major surgical division. However, the tower block (what we used to call) has declared not safe by JKR and IKRAM in 2008 as a sequence of multiple cracks and ceiling falls down. Guess, it will become part of Malaysian Health history as the hospital at risk of falling down.

Guess it's a payback time for Israel. In a recent World Economic Forum that was chaired by David Ignatius - and with panels consisted of Recep Tayyip Erdogan (Turkey's Prime Minister), Shimon Peres (Israel President), Ban Ki-moon (UN Secretary General), and Amr Moussa (Arab League Secretary); Mr Erdogan blasted Mr Peres regarding Israel's decision on insurgency against Gaza Strip.

It first started when Mr Peres pointed towards Mr Erdogan while asking "What Istanbul will do if thousands of missiles / rockets attack Istanbul?" While given insufficient amount of time to react to the question given, Mr Erdogan repplied that he regreted that the forum's participant clapped their hand when Mr Peres delivered his view regarding Israel right to attack Gaza. "When it comes to killing, you know well how to kill," he told Mr. Peres before scooping up his papers and leaving the stage.

This is one of leader wheter it Muslim or not; able to stand against issues that erode human rights. I do hope that our leaders are brave enough to stand in the international level in issues that concerning Muslim Worlds and Human Rights. TAHNIAH Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan!

So it's already a month since the year 2009AD begins. Looks like we have another 334 days before entering the new chapter of year 2010AD. For Muslims, it's means another 320 days to the next 1431H.

So what have happened in Malaysia and around the world in this 31 days of January 2009AD? These are some hottest news in Malaysia and around the world.

Israeli strikes over Gaza Strip and a ceasefire with HAMAS.
The strikes begin on 27th December 2008 with codename of Operation Cast Lead; targeted to to stop HAMAS rockets attack over Israel as well as to destroy HAMAS personnel and its infrastructures. The act however was condemned by World except the US that stated the Israel has every rights to protect their country. In fact, the strikes does not targeted only HAMAS but the civilians as well and up to date around 1330 Palestinians was killed and more than 5000 others wounded. More than half involved woman and children. The attack ended at first with Israel's unilateral ceasefire on 17th January 2009 followed by HAMAS and other Palestinian fighters on 18th January with condition a total pullout by Israel Army Forces. On January 21st, Israel completed their pul-out from Gaza strip.

This is by far as the best news in January that I know. It seems people's tsunami against BN reign is still continued and the recent victim was the Kuala Terengganu's parliamentary seat. With these victory, Pakatan Rakyat has add another seat with a total of 83 (plus one independence)in the Dewan Rakyat. I'm agree with PAS Spiritual Leader (Mursyidul AM) - TG Nik Abdul Aziz stated that the victory was not to be arrogant towards the others but as a task by people who had elected the member. Hope in the eve of 13th General Election we can see change for better government that totally care for peoples.

Mr Barrack Hussein Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of United States of America on 20th January 2009. The first African-American President has a lot of hopes over his shoulder not just among the Americans in the event of Economic Crisis but to the world that still waiting whether the new president will able to clean the image of US that have tarnish over the world's eye. Previously, the United States act over the war against terrorism brings chaos not just to the Muslims World but to the others as well.

There were other issues like MACC probe against UMNO leaders in view of Money-Politics, unemployment that might hit 6% overall for Malaysia due to economic-slow down, the 3rd stimulus that deepened the Malaysian's 2009 Budget Deficit,the death of A.Kugan in police's custody, the need of anti-hop law in view of BN's elected member that defected to Pakatan Rakyat's side and a lot of others. Guess it seems the month of February will be interesting and with the following months too. So guys, remember to read your newspaper as it's not just some lame material but for us to know what's happening around us. The Earth will keep Orbiting the Sun till the End of Day!

I'm watching Buletin Utama in TV3 tonight. There's segment from the journalist that currently in Gaza - looking with their own eyes on what happen to the people of Gaza. They've interviewed several children that suffered from the inhuman attack.

One of them had some of their family members killed during the strike. And this little girl has kept deep into their heart that she will strike back the Zionist Army when she had a chance. Hatred has been nourished in their heart and mind towards the Israeli as a consequence from the military strike. What do we expect from a little child that had experienced her own family members killed in front of them?

Another boy even though non of his family killed, had friends that used to play with got killed last couple of weeks. When he been asked whether he afraid of Israel, he replied "NO!". "It's enough with Allah's protection." What a brave kid! I wonder how man of children in Malaysia have the same spirit.Some of them even still afraid of ghost or dark. Looks like the Israel's strike unable to totally destroyed HAMAS defense as they've created thousands of Palestinian that will hunt them down.

May Allah be with the Shuahada and strengthen the Muslims. Amen.

My 12 - Great Pride for the Land of Grace

Ubudiah Mosque
(Built in 1917)

One of the symbol of pride for people of Kuala Kangsar is this mosque. One of the most beautiful mosque in Malaysia - Ubudiah Mosque Perak's royal mosque. It was built in 1917 with the cost of $200,000 during that time.

From left : onion-shaped dome with multiple minarets; the mosque mimbar or pulpit is located to the side of the mihrab for a khatib or some other speaker to offer a sermon (khutbah).

It was designed by Arthur Benison Hubback, a government architect who is notably credited for the design of the Ipoh railway station and the Kuala Lumpur railway station based on Mogul architecture. The construction was interrupted twice when at first two elephants belonging to the sultan's and Raja Chulan were fighting and ran over and damaged the imported Italian marble titles. The second time when the World War 2 broke out, by the Japanese Invasion.

I didn't have much entry for Taiping. A lot of places that we planned were eventually have to be ceased in view of weather and other unexpected reasons. Place like Bukit Larut or famous known as Maxwell Hill has to be canceled as we missed the jeep-ride time. But we did go to the Night Safari - the finest zoo in Malaysia, if you ask me.

After a night spent in Taiping, we moved to Kuala Kangsar; a particularly sentimental place for my father. Being one of the 'Old Boys', Kuala Kangsar was a second home for him as he spent nearly 5 years there. For me - being Hamidians, WTH! But I cannot ignore the fact that most our leaders were from MCKK. Only now that the college showed some declined as they're not performed well as they should be.

MCKK or Malay College of Kuala Kangsar - often some dubbed it as 'Eton of the East' (based on Eton College, England famously known as the chief nurse of England's statesmen) was establised by Mr R J Wilkinson - Inspector of Schools for the Federated Malay States during that time in January 2nd 1905. It was built as a special resedential for the education of Malays of good family and for the training of Malay boys for admission of certain branches of government services. Well it's seems a long history.

My 9 - Temple of Supreme Bliss

Next building is the magnificent Kek Lok Si temple is a Penang Hokkien for Temple of Supreme Bliss. Built in 1890, inspired by chief of Buddhist monk from the Temple of Goddess Mercy for the Mahayana Buddhism followers. The temple situated in Ayer Itam, Penang and one of the icon of Penang Island.

From left : this little girl make us carried an extra more - she's running everywhere and made others exhausted; one of the round-door, I wish I had this kind of lovely door - but minus the statue as we Muslim don't believe in idols. Hehehe

From left : one of the prayer hall; I'm not sure what the name of the hall near to the pagoda. It's not like in the Temple of Emerald Buddha, Bangkok where tourist guide and personal audio guide easily available. *sigh*

The temple was built on phases and still some construction are ongoing; particularly at the Statue of Kuan Yin hill. History stated that the temple even received the sanction of the Manchu Emperor Guangxu, who bestowed a tablet and gift of 70,000 volumes of the Imperial Edition of the Buddhist Sutras.

From left : Incline-lift rail - the highest in Malaysia for a temple, that brings pilgrimage and tourist to the Kuan Yin statue; the Bronze-Kuan Yin statue, inaugurated in 2002 and currently undergone major renovation to built the concentric roof that resembles the roof of Prayer Hall for Good Harvest in the Temple of Heaven, Beijing.

Currently, the temple is a focal point of festivals of the Chinese community in Penang. The Chinese New Year celebrations are particularly impressive: for 30 days following Chinese New Year, the temple remains open until late at night whilst thousands of lights turn the scenery into a sea of light.

There're several other places that I wish to highlight here in the blog from my family visit to Penang.One of it - the magnificent Kapitan Keling Mosque. It is situated on the corner of Lebuh Buckingham (Buckingham Street) and Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling (Masjid Kapitan Keling Road).

The tower only minaret - stunning architecture of British Mogul

The mosque got it name from the head of Indian Muslim Community - Caudeer Mohudeen that credited to build the mosque around 1800. The current mosque was actually upgraded in the 1910s, based on architecture of British Mogul Revival style, with the addition of Mughal domes and turrets, a large minaret and a madrasah. The mosque completed around 1916.

The mosque now is the location for the daily 5-times prayer as well as school and central community place for the locals.

Allah All Mighty!

Just now I had a chance to observe solar eclipse - partial one not the full. This event happen from 1630 Malaysian Standard Time (MST) when the moon 'touched' the sun disk till it eventually covered the sun 'almost' at 1750 MST. The phenomenon finished on 1855 MST when the moon 'leaved' the sun.

The last time Malaysia having a chance to observe solar eclipse - if I'm not mistaken in 1998. The annular type. I remember that time - the best place to see it somewhere in Sabah. Hmm, where is it?

I've tried various technique using my digital camera to capture the event. But *sigh*, this is the results from the poor camera. From left to right and up to down : first direct picture, then with sunglasses on top of the camera; then with one negative film - finally with both negative film on top of it.

There's various believes among the people around the world regarding the solar eclipse. Some consider it as a bad omen. I even remember that even some believed that the sun has been 'killed'. After centuries of knowledge expansion, human knew that the solar eclipse phenomenon is one of the nature's event. It is one of the All-Mighty's power. For us Muslim - it's a 'Sunat-Muakkad' (things that obliged to do) to perform Solah during this time as a sign that we 'bow' to His Greatness.

After I've adjusted both negative films, I'm able to capture above image. MasyaAllah! Oh, another thing : Beware! Do not look directly to the sun as it might damage your retina. This is not something that fake my friends.

My 7 - Fort that Stand Last

(Built in 1786)

I'm sure anyone who had visited Penang will visit this fort. One of the oldest fort in Malaysia, located at the Esplanade; marked as British Empire primary defend of the island during that time. However, this place was actually used for administrative purpose rather for the defense.

The fort open daily except on Sunday (WTH! - I thought numerous visitors will be there on Sunday). It worth of visit since we can learn on how the English during that time able to stand against most of the threat - particularly from the pirates and other European super-power that time.

It was built by Sir Francis Light after obtained the ownership from the Sultan of Kedah in exchange to protect the state from the Siam Empire. It was originally built using nibong tree and later was rebuilt by bricks and stone in 1804. And guess what? - It was built at the cost worth of $ 80,000 during that time. So cheap for a cost of fort nowaday.

The oldest cannon in Malaysia - I think this one was from the Dutch as its inscripted VOC or Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie means the Dutch East-India Company. I remember it has stated that the cannon was captured by the British army during war with the Dutch.

I'm still looking for the meaning of the above motto as I believed it's written in Latin. Anyone had idea?

My 6 - Penang Heritage Trails

Being one of the World Heritage Site - Penang never failed to prevail us their history. It's like a time machine; where we can experience both old world - when the British first set their foot on this strait's island and the new world - where peoples live in modern era. It's not only the physical of the old buildings exist but the culture and harmony relations among the indigenous peoples of the Pearl of Orient.

Both Federal and State government - working 'hand-to-hand' to make sure that these heritage survive and people are well educate into their importance. In Georgetown itself, tourist - whether locals or foreigners able to locate these buildings either by public transport (there are buses that take people around these trails) or just walking around the city.

From left : Municipal Council of Penang Island hall - the oldest local authority in Malaysia established in 1857, George Town become the first city in Malaya (that time) by a royal charter granted by HM Queen Elizabeth II but somehow the status was unsure its exist in view of the merged with the Penang Rural District Council; Cheong Fatt Tze mansion - built in 1890 by Hakka successful tycoon of shipping, opium and mining in SEA during that time, no photo was allowed to be taken inside and we're unlucky not to be inside as we missed the visiting hour. Sigh!

From these buildings - we know that this port (Georgetown) WAS and IS important to the British government and now to the Federation of Malaysia. Being the main entry point of the busiest and longest strait in the world, makes Penang become one of the most vibrant place in Peninsular Malaysia.

But my bad - I haven't got a chance to walk around the city as I was traveling with my family. Traveling during the month of December also not a good decision as it is monsoon here. Apparently it was raining almost every day here in December - sigh. Next time better make a proper plan - insyaAllah.

After having a quick nap at the hotel - we decided to go to P.Ramlee House. None of the Malaysian - either Malay, Chinese or Indian - that not enjoying this actor. P.Ramlee or his real name Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh born in March 22, 1929 was a great entertainer. His contribution in the Malaysian and Singaporean flm industry highly recognized not by both countries but even in Asia. His films have achieved multiple awards from the Asia Film Festival.

He was an actor, director, singer, song writer, composer, and other multiple roles. Even after his death in May 29, 1973 - his films and songs were still remembered and enjoyed by the Malaysians.

My 4 - Flowers that Blooming

Since it's still early and our room haven't ready yet - we decided to go to the Botanical Garden. The only thing that I can remember from this place during my childhood time was the monkey! I clearly remember that our picnic was ruined because of those naughty monkeys. But why put the blame on them when at first we're the one who feeds them. Hahaha.

The Botanical Garden or Penang Botanic Garden was established by Charles Curtis (1853 – 23 August 1928); an English botanist in 1884. The garden open daily from 5am till late 8pm and it's free. Many local do come here for recreation, having picnics with their families and jogging around the park. The park also serves as an education centre for people to learn about Malaysian's own natural flora.

My 3 - Long Live the Queen!

141208 : Alhamdulillah, we've arrived in George Town around 10.00 am. After a few turns, we managed to find our hotel for the holiday : The Northam All Suites! As we all exhausted from the long - 6 hours journey, we do hope that our room has ready. But it seems the luck was not in our hand as the suite was still not read yet - sigh!

The hotel staff suggest us to go around the city and they try their best for the room. We decided to go to Fort Cornwallis since it just nearby. And believe me - it was a wrong decision as it closed on Sunday. WTH! I thought most of the attraction open on weekend. What the purpose having a weekend (you're basically not working!) and all those Malaysia ZOOM campaign - and finally we've been told that the place is not open on Sunday. What - does the staff need to go to the Sunday Mass?

Hmm - nearby situated the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Clock Tower. It was built in 1897 commemerate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria of the British Empire's reign was from 1837 - 1901. During her reign, British was at their peak - leader in the Industrial Revolution. Her reign also marked the great expansion of the British Empire - make them the foremost global power of that time.

For Penangities - this also one of the famous landmark of the island. Just ask them of the Clock Tower or the 'Menara Jubli Intan' - they will know what you're talking about!

My 2 - Pearl of the Orient

Since I haven't been to a holiday with my family quite some time, we decided to go to Penang last December. This is my second time in Penang which the first one more than 10 years ago. I quite excited since the city also has been recognized as one of the World Heritage Sites; designated in 2008.

We started our journey from the 14th Dec 2008, exactly 0400 hrs. It took us more than 6 hours to arrive in Georgetown including 2 pit-stops - one in Tapah R&R for Fajr prayer and the other one in Gunung Semanggol R&R for breakfast. Burrrrp - nasi lemak and currypuff (Yummy!)

We took ferry from the Pengkalan Sultan Abdul Halim (Butterworth) that cost us RM 7.70 to the Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda (Penang island). What a memorible ride - but I kindda not feel the excitement as during the first time when we're here. But nice view and calm sea breeze makes me feels that I wanna cruise around the world in future.

By far - the most prominent building that you can see is the KOMTAR. It is not the highest building in Malaysia but it was when there is no Petronas Twin Tower (KLCC) during that time.

Next stop - Northam's All Suites Hotel. Excited but yet worry as I'm the one who make the reservation. Hope the room available.

The OIC has requested all "peace loving nations" work to call the UN general assembly.

"What happened in the school was a hugely offensive and inhumane thing. We never expected that people who sought refuge in a UN building would be attacked and killed," Heba, a Gaza resident and mother of two. Israel is facing mounting pressure to agree a ceasefire after an attack on a school run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (Unrwa) in the northern town of Jabaliya on Tuesday left 43 Palestinians dead and around 100 wounded.

"When you are trying to feed 750,000 people a day in Gaza as we are, you need a permanent ceasefire. The United States of America blocked efforts at the Security Council to broker a ceasefire; reported by Reuters on 4th January 2009.

Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, said at the UN that the US considered a ceasefire "necessary" and that she had impressed on Israeli and Arab ministers "the importance of moving [the] initiative forward''.However Rice reiterated her belief that any ceasefire "will not allow a return to the status quo". "If the Arabs don't settle for less than a resolution and the US can't be convinced of a statement it is not clear where this will go," she says.

Time to departure. Well what I do achieve from my visit? I know that my experience can't compared to others and it will not make me understand of both countries. But this visit has give me ideas on what happened to the others.

We all living in one world - we share the common air, land and water. Only due to our difference, we make classification and claimed that it belong to us. Yet we try to forget that we all come from a same father and mother - Adam and Eve.

Being in Cambodia has enlighten me on what war had influenced the lime of Cambodian. War never made for a good reason but most of the leaders preferred it as main choice. Sometimes we didn't bother to think of the aftermath. Guess human minds despite given by God able to choose good upon bad - we seems to make the latter option. However Cambodia did strive for their future. Only the leader and their people can change their country.

In Thailand much more different situation. Being the only country haven't been occupied by the European colonies makes them proud of their history. It makes them strongly trust their King and remain faith to their religion. The Thai did enjoy their life - more or less. But I can't hide my feeling toward Thailand on what have they done to other countries previously. Many history that actually were Lao's and Khmer's but finally fell to them. Really - history wrote by the winner! And I do pray that our brother in the South (Muslim and Malay) will always remain unite and strength will to overcome the difficult task.

It's time for me to go back to Malaysia. After 7 days being in Cambodia and Thailand - I need some rest and continue my work.

You can go to any major shopping complex and the option of various restaurants available - whether it Thais, Malay, Japanese, Korean, Western etc. Just choose it carefully and if you're in doubt, you can always ask.

The last place that I visit in the Dusit Palace area is the Vimanmek Palace. It is the largest golden teak wood mansion in the world! It was built by King Rama V in 1900 - makes this palace more than 100 years old!

Fun fact : this palace didn't used any form of nails! Marvelous as they can build it 3-floors.

The palace provide a free tour with guide (both in Thai and English) each half hour apart. The tour took nearly 2 hours and you will get brief explanation by your tourist guide. The palace showed a vast collection of the Thai's Kings consisted of gift from local and foreign countries and things that the King by himself. Again - this place doesn't allow camera, video or any form of photography. But you can take picture outside - in the clear area. OK - time to move on!

Another fun fact : On the upper level showed that the trace of once this palace being bombed during the World War II by Japanese Army. During that time the palace is not occupied. Miraculously - the palace didn't burned out despite being made of wood. The people believe it's due to the miracle of Thai King.

Yet another throne hall that have been changed to museum. The Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall just situated few meters from the Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall. This marvelous building built in Euro-Moorish-Thai architecture that cathes your eyes with it's beauty. The throne now display handicrafts such as mutmee silk, nielloware and basketry. The exhibition monitored by Queen Sirikit's SUPPORT Foundation.

Since I only have several hours left before my departure - I need to move fast to the next location. It situated within Dusit Palace in the Dusit area. I've took tuk-tuk here that cost me THB40 from the Grand Palace.

I didn't enter the throne as time not permitted. The now-throne-become-museum was constructed by King Rama V. It built in Italian Renaissance and Neoclassical style of architecture. The exterior is decorated with marble from Carrara, Italy. It is a two storey marble construction approximately 49.50 meters wide, 112.50 meters long and 47.50 meters high with a large center dome surrounded by six smaller domes. It was completed in 1915.

The King's Palace - who would miss the chance when you're already here. It is stated by the FORBES that the Grand Palace including Wat Phra Kaew was the 16th most visited tourist attraction in the world with 8,995,000 visitors in 2006. What a huge number of people.

The Grand Palace situated beside the Chapel of Emerald Buddha was built during reign of King Rama I in 1782 as the King decided to move the capital of Siam from Thoburi to the present Bangkok. It has been used as the official palace of Kings of Chakri Dynasty till the time of King Rama VIII where he was found death mysteriously in one of the palace building.

The current King Rama IX has moved permanently to Chitralada Palace as the official residence. The architecture of the buildings was heavily influenced with Italian Renaissance style mived with the Thai's traditional architecture. These happens as the previous Kings was so impressed with the European architecture when visiting abroad and decided to adopt it.

Since I've been cheated by the tuk-tuk driver, I only arrived to the Grand Palace compound around 5.00pm - and it's already closed! I go back to my hotel - frustrated but make another plan to be there early next morning.

Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace are situated in the same place. These places shouldn't be missed by anyone that visited Bangkok. The place can be reached with the Chao Phraya tourist boat / ferry - just stop at the Maharaj pier. There are rules and regulation need to be followed as these are the most sacred place for the Thais.

It open daily from 8.30am till 3.30pm Some buildings may close during holiday or ceremony. All visitors need to wear modest cloth - no shorts, sleeveless shirt etc. Fee : THB 300 for foreigners; language audio guide available for rent for THB 100. The ticket can be use to enter the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, Wimanmek Palace and the Coin Museum.

Wat Phra Kaew or Temple of the Emerald Buddha regarded as the Thais as the most sacred place in Thailand. It one of the most convenience place to visit as you wouldn't lost in this huge place. Near the main entrance, a lot of tourist guide will wait for you to be hire around the temple and also the Grand Palace. If you prefer to travel alone, audio guide in 5 main languages available at the ticket booth for rent. I decided to choose the audio guide as its give me some freedom to move around the place.

It will guide you around the temple and palace and informed you the important places that you should see.

The Emerald Buddha - created in India circa 43 BC by Nagasena. Initially requested by King Anuruth of Burma to support Buddhism in his country, the statue lost on his way but suprisingly landed in Cambodia. The statue was brought to Ayutthaya when the Thai captured Angkor. The image disappeared when Burmese raiders sacked Ayuttaya and the image was feared lost. A century later, the 'Emerald' Buddha reappeared in Chiang Saen, after a rainstorm washed away some of its plaster covering. It was then moved to Chiang Rai, then Chiang Mai, where it was removed by prince Setatiratt to Luang Prabang, when his father died and he ascended the throne of that Siamese vassal state. In later years it was moved to the Siamese vassal state of Vientiene. Later when Siam fought with Laos - the statue was recaptured back again and was kept in several places till to this temple now. Sigh - long history but whose the righteous to keep this statue? Is it Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos or Thailand? Or should they reconsider to give it back to India? Guess the winner will keep it!

There are three different sets of gold clothing, which are changed by the King of Thailand in a ceremony at the changing of the seasons around March, July and November. The two sets of gold clothing not in use at any given time are kept on display in the nearby Pavilion of Regalia, Royal Decorations and Thai Coins on the grounds of the Grand Palace, where the public may view them.

Happy New Year 2009M and Ma'al Hijrah 1430H everybody. May this year bring us prosperity and success in what we plan to achieve.

Whole world shocked with what happen in Gaza Strip when we approached new year. Hundreds of air strike launched by the Israeli's IDF to the Gaza City in attempt to destroy HAMAS strength in the name of terrorism. But is it true? Who decide that the right to defend our own land is the act of terrorism?

Our brothers suffered enough and yet not much help reached them. I wonder where are the rich Arabs and other Muslims around the world? Where're those with big influence in the world's political stage? The Palestenian's issue seems never end even after thousands of UN Resolution, as if it will never end. Then what can we do as Brothers?

I would like to share on what written in Harakah - Friday Edition. It mention that PAS President urged the Muslim community to perform 'Solat Hajat' and 'Qunut Nazilah' where we pray for our brothers strength to obercome this problem and Allah's judgement onto the Israelis / Zionist regime. I know its nothing much but these are the small things that we can do.

The other thing is to stand unite and voice our concern through any media; be it mass media, demonstration or even boycott the American / Israel's goods. I know some will say that by boycotting their product such as McDonald's, Starbucks, etc (just name few) our local people will loose their job. But do please remember that previously Dr Yusuf Al-Qardawi - one of prominent Muslim scholars did gave a 'fatwa' that every money that we spent on these products will end as weapons to kill our brother!

I do hope that our government will act on this matter. First - the Malaysian parliment should voice-out that people of Malaysia condemn this barbaric act and will not tolerate on the destruction of Palestin. We - through UN, OIC, G15 and NAM should stand unite against the act of Israel - that totally against UN Resolution and world peace!

May Allah saves our Brothers and give strength not only them but us to fight the Zionist regime. Amen.

The final temple of the day was Wat Benchamabophit Dusitvanaram or famously known as the 'Marble Temple' built by King Chulalongkorn on 1899. It is one of Bangkok's most beautiful temples and a major tourist attraction.

Inside the Ordination Hall (Ubosot) is a Sukhothai-style Buddha statue named Phra Buddhajinaraja, cast in 1920. The ashes of King Chulalongkorn are buried beneath the statue.

The temple's name literally means the Temple of the fifth King located nearby Dusit Palace. It was designed by Prince Naris, a half-brother of the king, and is built of Italian marble.

Trivia : The temple was featured in the famous The Amazing Race 9 as the 10th and final elimination pit-stop.

Th 9 - Swing to Death!

One of the ritual that have been stopped in view of numerous casualties was the Ceremony of Tri-yampawai or the Swinging Festival done at the Giant Swing. The Giant Swing was originally constructed in 1784 in front of the Devasathan shrine by King Rama I.

The Swinging Festival usually occurs at about Christmas time. Processions bear the 'mock king,' who is an official of high rank, to the big swing. Brahmin priests lead him to a carpeted platform where he sits with one foot placed on his knee to observe the unfolding events. He is attended by four Brahmin priests, two on his right and two on his left, until the three rounds of swinging have ended. This can take about two hours. If he touches the floor with his raised foot before the games are ended, the Brahmins were allowed to strip him of his property and clothes and chase him through the streets. Nowadays, he has to pay a hefty fine to the Brahmins instead.

Four or five men, who are dressed in white with tall conical hats, mount the swing and urge it towards a bamboo pole on which a bag of money is hung. The nearest man on the swing tries to grab it with his teeth. This is somewhat difficult and dangerous as the swing supports are 75 feet high. The first set of swingers who succeed get twelve ticals, the second eight, and the third four. After the third set has proved successful the Brahmin priests then sprinkle water as a blessing, and everyone returns to the palace.

The Swing Ceremong are based on the story from an ancient Hindu epic - after Brahma created the world he sent Shiva to look after it. When Shiva descended to the earth, Naga serpents wrapped around the mountains in order to keep the earth in place. When Shiva found the earth solid, the Nagas moved to the seas in celebration. The Swing Ceremony is a re-enactment of this story. The pillars of the Giant Swing represent the mountains, while the circular base of the swing represents the earth and the seas. In the ceremony Brahmins swing, trying to grab a bag of coins placed on one of the pillars.

Maybe it takes courage or even stupidity to revive back this fatal ceremony. Wat Suthat - the royal temple on the background.

Wat Ratchanaddaram or literally means 'Royal Niece' located at the Ratchadamnoen Klang and Mahachak Roads, in the Phra Nakhon district of Bangkok. I went to this temple with tuk-tuk from Wat Pho. Need to change route as a local told me that the Grand Palace was closed in view of the death of the King Rama IX's sister. Initially I didn't know much about this temple but after being told that this is one of the temple that shouldn't missed - I proceed. And futhermore it's free!

Loha Prasat or Iron Monastery

This temple built on 1846 by King Rama III. It is best known for the Loha Prasat means 'Iron Monastery' and the name refers to the 37 metal spires on the pagoda. These 37 spires represent the 37 virtues that lead to enlightenment.

Loha Prasat it is presently the only metal-based Buddhist construction left in the world, making it a viable candidate for Unesco World Heritage Site status in 1995. It derived its name from the first structure of this kind built in India by a female devotee of Visakha, There were only 3 temples built based on the structure - each in India (the original), Sri Lanka (built by King Dutthagamini of Anurajapura in 161 BC) and in Thailand. However the first two have become ruined.

Th 7 - Be Amaze with Largest Reclining Buddha

The Temple of the Reclining Buddha
noted Belfry - the time teller of every monastery and in Buddhism it symbolizes “awakening for the noble-truth and the feeling of peace”.

The largest single Buddha images: the Reclining Buddha (Phra Buddhasaiyas) is 46m long + 15m high and heavily decorated with gold plating on his body.

My next stop - Wat Pho famous for its thousands of Buddha image - with the centre attraction is 'the largest reclining Buddha' and the famous massage school. The temple just a few minutes walk from the Tien pier. Wat Pho is one of the largest and oldest temple in Bangkok.

Her full name is Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm Rajwaramahaviharn, built as restoration of an earlier temple on 1788. The temple complex consists of two walled compounds with the northern walled compound is where the reclining Buddha and massage school are found. The southern walled compound, Tukgawee, is a working Buddhist monastery with monks in residence and a school.

Notes : Admission fee = THB 50 and it open from 8.00am till 5.00pm.

You can even try your luck where you put a handful of Thai coins one into each bowl. There is better explanation for this ritual but again - no notes taken during the explanation given. Sigh ...
